Almost 95 schools violate ‘no graduation fee policy’; Youth groups demands DepEd for Refund
Fri, Mar 19, 2010
Students led by the Kabataan Partylist ang the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) trooped to the Department of Education- Main office to demand DepEd to release a memo calling all the schools that have violated the “no graduation fee policy” to refund the fees paid by the students and parents.
Babaylan Garduce, NUSP- Highschool Chairperson, said that they have received hundreds of complaints from students and parents since they launched the complaint hotline weeks ago.
Based on the Kabataan Partylist Hotline partial count, at least 95 schools are still collecting fees for graduation. Some have even reported that they already paid their graduation fees and they want their payment back.
“It is our position that school administrations should not impose graduation and other corollary fees on our students and parents as these fees are inconsistent with long-standing government policy of making basic education free and accessible to our youth. It is our belief that whatever fees that had already been paid by our students in this regard must be refunded and all further plans to impose such be suspended,” Garduce said.
NUSP and Kabataan Partylist urge the DepEd to be strict in monitoring and implementing the DepEd Order. The students demand the DepEd to release another memorandum commanding the schools to refund the graduation fees that they have collected.
Kabataan Partylist have also submitted a letter today, requesting a dialogue to the Department of Education. We will bring along complaining parents and students in order to substantiate the complaints, and provide them an adequate opportunity to address their grievances.##
