The Proposed Academic Calendar Shift, Globalization and Modern Day Slavery – NUSP

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) expresses strong opposition to the change in the country’s academic calendar. The change in the academic calendar is not a mere issue of the shift from June to August or September as the opening of classes. Moreover, what is most needed to be underscored is the real raison d’etre behind such shift – the so-called “internationalization” of education to suit the political and economic thrusts of neoliberal globalization under the name “ASEAN Economic Community 2015.” The Philippines, after Thailand shifted its academic calendar last 2011, is the sole ASEAN (Association of…

A Call to Vigilance this 2014: Year-end Statement of the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP)

This 2014, the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) affirms its commitment to promote and protect the democratic rights and interests of the students, youth and the Filipino people. NUSP also affirms the necessity of collective action in pushing for genuine education and social transformation. It is through the unwavering and unfaltering collective action of the students and the masses that saw 2013 as a historical year even in the midst of crude anti-student and anti-people policies and programs of the BS Aquino government. While students, youth and the people were belittled, pushed against the wall, deprived of…

To Go Against the Neoliberal Flow: On UP, EARIST and the Moribund Character of State Education

There are two state universities, among the many agonizing ones, that saw this week a clear-cut manifestation of the worsening, and yes, moribund, crisis of the Philippine tertiary education system. Amidst increasing budget cuts and state abandonment, there is an increasing commercialization and neoliberalization of state universities such as the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute for Science and Technology (EARIST). The Board of Regents of UP, led by CHED Chairperson Licuanan, UP President Pascual and Regent Albarracin, without a quorum (only five out of 11 were present), ignored the motion of Faculty Regent Lourdes…

5,000 students stage walk-out vs illegal fees, demands Aquino gov’t to re-channel pork, funds to education

REFERENCE: Philip Bautista, ISG President, 0916-1089-182 Some 5,000 students of Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology walked out of their classes today to protest against the illegal collection of the P1,500 Development Fee in their school. The students demand that the Aquino administration re-channel funds to education and social services following the notion that the government has enough funds when the pork barrel scam was exposed and the Supreme Court declared the unconstitutionality of the Priority Development Assistance Funds, Malampaya Funds and Presidential Social Fund among others. “Our mobilization today shows the anger and massive discontent of the…

NUSP on the Supreme Court ruling on PDAF: We have long been telling that pork is illegal

While the Aquino administration has perennially tried to justify the existence of the pork barrel funds in light of recent earthquake and typhoon wreckages in the country, the Supreme Court ruled illegal, unconstitutional the existence of the priority development assistance fund (PDAF), previous laws allowing for PDAF, and crucial provisions of the use of the Malampaya funds under the discretion and direction of the president. The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) welcomes the move of the Supreme Court, touting such decision as a product of the organized efforts and clamor of the Filipino people to scrap the…

We invoke the right to know the truth! We invoke the peoples’ right to abolish pork! — NUSP

One after another, in what appears to be a litany of lies, Janet Lim Napoles during the November 7, 2013 Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing, has not only attempted to obscure the truth, but has also wittingly attempted to divorce President Noynoy Aquino from all the pork barrel scandal. With nothing substantial and truthful solicited from Napoles, it should be clearer and clearest by now that the Aquino administration utilizes Napoles in more ways than one – deny any and all connections with the president, distance the president from the issue, and point the dirty fingers at the enemies of…

NUSP: Rechannel pork directly to education, basic social services; Student leaders “march forward” in the more vigilant call to abolish Aquino’s pork barrel system

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) reiterates the just demand to abolish the whole pork barrel system. Student leaders from various colleges and universities, together with other sectors, march to Luneta anew, today, September 13, 2013, in what is touted as “Forward March.” “To march forward is to expose the litany of lies the Aquino administration has spewed in the whole course of the peoples’ demand to abolish the pork barrel system. Aquino tried to derail the issue by orchestrating a fictitious plot: the surrender of Janet Napoles, the surfacing of Benhur Luy, and even the violence…

NUSP smells ‘cronyism’ in hasty Palace defense of Mar over corruption charges

“Is this another case of KKK?” This was the reaction of Sheryl Alapad, secretary-general of the National Union of Students in the Philippines (NUSP) to presidential spokesperson Lacierda’s defense of DILG Secretary Mar Roxas over his links to yet another ‘bogus’ non-government organization (NGO). The group questioned the undue haste with which presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda ‘absolved’ Roxas, President Noynoy Aquino’s losing running mate back in 2010 and rumored 2016 presidential bet, from any wrongdoing. Roxas was tagged last Tuesday in a report by the Commission on Audit (COA) as having rechanneled P5 million of his own PDAF to the…
