Firm in our Objection: No to the Proposed UST Tuition Increase

The Central Student Council – Central Board reaffirms our objection to ANY proposed increase in tuition fees. This objection was clearly manifested by the student council presidents during the tuition consultation meeting last February 20, in the presence of several University administration officials and other stakeholders. We, however, manifest our regret and frustration over the fact that the tuition consultation meeting was a mere formality for the University administration to comply with government regulation that was obviously crafted to favor school owners. CHED Memo 3-2012 does not require school owners to get the consent of the students nor parents. All it…

“16,000 pesos will definitley kill the PUP student’s dream of attaining tertiary education.” The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), under the administration of President Emanuel C. De Guzman, is once again attempting a tuition and other school fees increase and imposition. PUP plans to increase the upcoming senior high school students’ tuition and other school fees (OSF) to P16,000 for school year 2015-2016. This is an average of 1,600 percent tuition increase. This is not the first time that the PUP administration attempted to increase its tuition and OSF. Early last year, the PUP Central Student Council and the…

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) expresses deep sympathy and calls for justice as the student union and its member-student councils condole with the grieving family of Cagayan State University (CSU) freshman student Rosanna Sanfuego. Rosanna reportedly took her own life due to the pressure of being unable to pay for the cost of CSU education. While the CSU administration boasts of a zero tuition in the university since 2009, it has been found that the cost of undergraduate tuition has been redistributed to miscellaneous or other school fees (OSF) ranging from P2,000 to P4,000. Interviews with…

Student union to CHED: Denial won’t make tuition hikes disappear

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is not only blind and ignorant of tuition and other school fees (OSF) increases. The commission is utterly inutile, negligent, irresponsible and worthless. It is no surprise that CHED denied last Monday, February 23, 2015, that around 400 higher education institutions (HEIs) intend to increase tuition and OSF. CHED may deny all it wants, but it won’t make tuition and OSF hikes disappear. CHED does not know anything. CHED is not doing its job. In fact, CHED should not wait until April 1, the deadline set for HEIs to apply for tuition and OSF…

Quezon City, Philippines – The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP), together with other student and youth groups, hold a dance mobilization versus tuition and other school fees (OSF) increases to the tune of the hit song “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, in front of the Commision on Higher Education (CHED). Their version of the song likens school administrators, CHED and BS Aquino III to “hold uppers” and robbers for the high cost of Philippine education. This is among the weeklong activities that will culminate in a National Day of Walkout vs Tuition…
