#NeverForget Mendiola Massacre; 28 years of Injustice and Impunity

Land distribution to farmers has always been part of electoral promises. But history has shown us that the centuries-old battle of the Filipino people for genuine agrarian reform has always been met by state violence. Such violence was experienced by Filipino farmers during the dark Mendiola Massacre of January 22, 1987.  The perennial problem of landlessness of the majority in the country is perpetuated not only by the ruling elite but also by state-sponsored bogus land reform policies named “Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Policy” (CARP) and its worsened form, Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program Extension with Reforms (CARPER). Moreover, foreign and multi-national companies…

Student group asks Pope to stand against high cost of education, especially in PH Catholic schools

An alliance of student organizations and education advocates called on Pope Francis Wednesday to also intervene in the issue of education, particularly the spiraling matriculation rates in Catholic colleges and universities in the Philippines. Rise for Education Alliance (R4E), a group composed of student councils, campus journalists, and youth organizations, said that the prohibitive cost of education – especially in Philippine Catholic schools – goes against the teachings of Pope Francis on “the economy of exclusion” in his Evangelii Gaudium or Apostolic Exhortation. “In the Pope’s famous Apostolic Exhortation, he tells us that ‘money must serve, not rule.’ Sadly, in…

Students intensify campaign to junk all other school fees

Student leaders are geared to junk all other school fees (OSF). Today, students under the banner of the Rise for Education (R4E) Alliance troop to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to condemmn the commission’s pro-commercialization  scheme and for being a stampad for tuition and OSF increases. “OSF are other school fees aside from tuition that are rapaciously being collected by universities and colleges, both private and state-run, that hinder students from accessing education. OSF are characterized as exorbitant, dubious and redundant,” points out Ms. Sarah Elago, Rise for Education Alliance (R4E) Convenor. “Through the years, OSF actually surpass the…

Quick facts: Ampatuan Massacre

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) criticizes the consolidated version of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill as “FOE”: an enemy to public access of information because it grants Malacanang executives, heads of offices, designated officers and all the powers-that-be greater “Freedom of Exemption.” The 24 FOI versions were consolidated by the Technical Working Group (TWG) of Congress’ Public Information Committee and is subject for approval on November 24, 2014. “DAPat Mabatid”: Executive Power Curtails Access to Information NUSP hits the “consensus FOI” as a blanket of power for the likes of Chief Executive BS Aquino III…
