  • NUSP leads campout protest in CHED, slams flawed free tuition policy and new round of tuition hikes

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) led student organizations and youth groups in a campout protest at the national office of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to oppose the flawed free tuition policy and the new round of hikes in tuition and other school fees (OSF). “Not only has CHED implemented a flawed free tuition policy, it has also approved tuition and other school fees hikes in higher educational institutions (HEIs),” said NUSP National Spokesperson Mark Vincent Lim. Earlier this quarter, the Department of Budget  and Management (DBM) and CHED released the implementing rules and regulations…

  • NUSP denounces new round of tuition increase in universities, Duterte’s failed promises

Earlier today, the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) attended a press conference of progressive youth organizations at the House of Representatives denouncing the new round of tuition and other fees increase in universities and colleges. The group also hit the Duterte administration’s failure to deliver on his promise of free tuition in state universities and colleges (SUCs). The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Monday approved the increase in tuition and other school fees in 268 private higher education institutions (HEIs). Tuition hike will be implemented in 262 of the HEIs, while 237 institutions will increase other…

  • NUSP denounces GRP’s unreasonable demands which disrupt the 5th round of peace talks

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) denounces the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) in disrupting the formal peace negotiations with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) by sidelining the substantive agenda on social and economic reforms and raising unreasonable demands. The GRP Negotiating Panel demands the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) to withdraw its order to the New People’s Army (NPA) to defend the Filipino people and carry out more tactical offensives in response to the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao, and the NDFP to immediately sign a joint ceasefire…

  • NUSP: Never Again to Martial Law!

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) joined groups from different sectors last May 26 at the Black Friday protest against Martial Law. The student union denounces President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao and the threat to impose it nationwide. On the 23rd of May 2017, the threats and rhetoric of Duterte on declaring martial law from the past months finally materialized in the provinces of Mindanao. The declaration was said to be in response to the purported terrorist attacks in the area, more particularly the armed clashes in Marawi City between the Armed Forces…

  • NUSP slams contentious provisions on tertiary education bill

The House of Representatives yesterday passed on third and final reading House Bill 533 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Bill. “We still denounce those contentious provisions that we have pointed out in the past,” said National Union of Student of the Philippines (NUSP) National Spokesperson Mark Vincent Lim. In particular, NUSP calls to scrap the policy on giving priority to poor and deserving students. “The guise of “prioritizing the poor” has been used to legitimize tuition and other school fee increases under the neoliberal framework of gearing state universities and colleges (SUCs) to generate their own income…
