PUP students decry campus militarization in the guise of disaster preparedness

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP), the Office of the Student Regent (OSR) of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Sentral na Konseho ng Mag-aaral (SKM), Sandigan ng Mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan (SAMASA) and other youth groups highly condemn the presence of military elements inside the PUP campus. Under the guise of a disaster preparedness forum, the government is intensifying the militarization of PUP in an attempt to undermine the strong progressive activism in PUP.

Student groups strongly assert that the PUP administration should not allow nor tolerate any military-instigated activities and should uphold PUP’s academic and democratic orientation that is free from military armed men.

For the longest time, military-instigated activities such as disaster preparedness fora, medical outreach programs and the like are mere sugarcoatings or disguises to the real reason why the military is inside the school: campus militarization!

The increasing and perennial presence of military elements in PUP and other schools is not only a cause of alarm, but a cause of vigilance. The past months have seen the prevalence of cases of harassment of student leaders and activists, the abductions and illegal arrests on trumped up charges of activists and labor leaders. All of these purported and committed by military elements.

In PUP, militarization includes the harassment of student leaders and activists, hijacking of socio-political events, and intelligence work on student leaders. We condemn that this is allowed by the PUP administration inside the PUP.

This is an organized and systematic attack by the fascist government of BS Aquino III. Military intelligence work and repression aim to undermine the student movement inside the PUP campus. But the students will never take this lighlty.

End campus militarization!, Uphold PUP as a democratic space for the students and the people!, Stop the harassments, abductions and killings!
