Sto. Nino Parochial School Urged: Stop Harassing Krissel Mallari, Release Certificate of Good Moral Character

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) decries the continuing harassment and repression by the Sto. Nino Parochial School (SNPS) to its batch salutatorian, Krisel Mallari. Mallari is unable to process her college enrollment in the University of Santo Tomas (UST) because the SNPS is withholding her certificate of good moral character for Krissel’s exposition of the said high school’s politics related to honors and awards. Krisel cried injustice during her graduation speech, which was then censored by SNPS officials. The Court of Appeals has already released a temporary restraining order that allows Mallari to get her certificate….

UST Students Hold Unity Walk, Roar Against School Fee Hikes

Manila – University of Santo Tomas (UST) students and student leaders held a Unity Walk to express their outrage against the looming 5% to 7.9% tuition increase for academic year (AY) 2015-2016. “It seems the UST administration has not learned from Pope Francis’ words and actions. By imposing a new round of tuition and other school fees (OSF) increases, UST is far from showing mercy and compassion! The fact that the university accumulated more than 6.4 billion in net assets from the previous year, it is unnecessary to impose any school fee hike. Increasing tuition and OSF in UST is…

Firm in our Objection: No to the Proposed UST Tuition Increase

The Central Student Council – Central Board reaffirms our objection to ANY proposed increase in tuition fees. This objection was clearly manifested by the student council presidents during the tuition consultation meeting last February 20, in the presence of several University administration officials and other stakeholders. We, however, manifest our regret and frustration over the fact that the tuition consultation meeting was a mere formality for the University administration to comply with government regulation that was obviously crafted to favor school owners. CHED Memo 3-2012 does not require school owners to get the consent of the students nor parents. All it…

#AyokoMagmahal tops PH trending topic over UST students’ outrage vs tuition & school fees increase

University of Santo Tomas (UST) students trended in social media the hashtag #AyokoMagmahal to express outrage against the looming 5% to 7.9% tuition increase for academic year (AY) 2015-2016. #AyokoMagmahal became one of the PH trending topics in twitter yesterday. In his tweet, UST Central Student Council – Central Board Speaker Mr. Victor Villanueva said that “aside from 5-7.9% increase in ‘tuition’ UST admin proposes a 30% increase in library fees to more than 2k for most students.” UST students firmly believe that the UST administration does not need to increase tuition and other school fees (OSF) since it has…

Students file complaints against fee hikes; NUSP calls on CHED for tuition moratorium

Student leaders from the Lyceum of the Philippines University, University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, University of the East lead by the National Union of Students of the Philippines trooped at the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to file complaints against the unabated tuition and miscellaneous fee increases proposed by universities for the coming school year. “Around 5 – 10% in tuition and up to 200% increases on miscellaneous fees is expected to be imposed for 2013-2014. At this rate, tuition and miscellaneous fee increases makes education increasingly unaffordable to a vast majority of Filipino youths whose parents…

Student leaders assail PNoy’s pro-tuition increase and anti-Pablo-victims stance

The National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) condemns President Noynoy Aquino’s lack of political will and action on two pressing issues: the Department of Social Work and Development’s (DSWD) “hoarding” of relief goods for Pablo victims in Davao and the spate of proposed tuition and other school fees increases to attack the students next academic year. “The ‘hoarding’ of relief goods by the DSWD is a clear indication of the anti-people stance of the Aquino government. The ill-mannered actions of Dinky Soliman and her office are very telling of Aquino’s abandonment of its responsibility to save the victims…

Manifesto of Unity Against the Proposed 5% Increase on Tuition and Other Fees We, the students of the University of Santo Tomas express our opposition on the proposed 5% tuition and other fees increase (TOFI) with the following stands: A.  Yearly TOFI appends the aggravating financial condition of Thomasians and Filipinos. For the past decade, our tuition in the University of Santo Tomas has increased by 75% (from P716/unit in 2003 to P1,249/unit this 2013).With the worsening economic crisis, manifested by low wages and continuous job lay-offs, it would be insensitive for a Catholic school to implement another tuition increase…
