Youth leaders hold lightning rally in Congress to protest Martial Law extension

Youth leaders from different universities and organizations held a lightning rally during the joint session inside the Plenary Hall of the House of Representatives to protest the plan to extend Martial Law in Mindanao until the end of 2017.

President Duterte asked the Senate and the House of Representatives to convene for a special session to discuss the proposal to extend martial law until December 31, 2017, one day before the supposed ending of martial law in Mindanao.

“The NUSP condemns the proposal of Malacañang to extend Martial Law in Mindanao until the end of the year, December 31. The request for extension is only an admission by the government that nothing has been achieved to solve the Marawi crisis in the 60-day span of the Martial Law,” NUSP National Spokesperson Mark Vincent Lim said.

“This impending extension will continue to legitimize militarization and US military presence in Mindanao. It has done nothing but bring about the displacement, disappearances, rape, killings and other human rights violations to our Lumad and Moro brothers and sisters,” Lim said.

“President Duterte’s pronouncement yesterday about the cancellation of peacetalks, announcing that the communist party is the number one enemy of the state and telling that the Lumad are supporters of NPA will only make the situation worse. He even added that he is ready to kill 20 million Filipinos. NUSP strongly condemns this statement,” Lim said.

Our Lumad brothers and sisters are already experiencing harassment and intimidation from the AFP.  In this administration, one farmer, one national minority, one civilian is killed every single day.

The Union is firm in its call against the extension of Martial Law and state fascism. It enjoins all student councils and organizations to release statements of condemnation and lead local protest actions and activities.

The NUSP, along with the farmers, workers, national minorities, and all other basic sectors will march during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 24 to hold Duterte accountable for all his failed promises and atrocities.
